But Not Today

OUR VERDICT

Chilling | Disturbing | Alluring

When Hannibal Lecter inhales deeply and says to Clarice Starling upon their first meeting: "You use Evian skin cream, and sometimes you wear L'Air du Temps. But not today … ", he says it with the force of a provocation, like a suggestion with a mere sprinkling of sublime violence. With this utterance, it is a touching without hands; an olfactory assessment and caress all at once.

But Not Today is a violent maelstrom as it opens, like a bloodied red and restless painting by Hieronymus Bosch, still wet and glossy, with paint sliding down the canvas. The smell of mineral pigment and turpentine fills the air, the impression of blood catches our attention. It celebrates a particular but authentic love which Hannibal the Cannibal has for Clarice Starling: “Answer me Clarice, would you tell me, stop, if you love me, stop?”.  Bitter herbs and citruses mark the opening of this fragrance, as if recalling a classic Florentine cologne made up of bergamot, lavender, lemon, rosemary, and shivering mosses. Indeed, the very place Hannibal spends some of his time, eluding Clarice. Most important is a dash of peppery carnation, strewn on a bed of animalic leather warmed with immortelle - the touch of warm soft skin. It has a smoky flash of green through galbanum and angelica, and despite all of this excitement, the fragrance has a still heartbeat made of woods and amber. It is disturbing serenity, … a long, far too long, stare through bloodied glass.
