Corpus Equus
OUR VERDICT
Dark | Animalistic | Wild
A leather rendered in shadows, Corpus Equus is a brooding fragrance evoking a degree of melancholy, accompanied with an intense animalic and muscular strength that is maintained throughout the lifetime of this scent.
Reminiscent of the sweat of a racehorse, this strangely off-sweet aroma merges with the phenolic top of birch tar, then rapidly folding into a smoke note that is as dark as ink. Straddling the line between the rustic and sophisticated, this is tinged with a bitterness that moves the fragrance away from polite nature and towards its irreverent underside. There is bodily heat to be detected here, as well as animalic musk and a quality of leather that is raw, untreated, and curiously charred.
Whilst it would be usual protocol to tame this intensity with overtly fresh top notes, the only quality of reprieve is that of a rose note that is more dusty and dry than it is fresh, elongating the fragrance. The overall body of this animal is flushed in the sweet smoky stickiness of charred incense, animating the composition, simulating the equine grace of a dark horse.
